Michel Nykjær out of Nika Racing
Nika Racing has ended the contract early with Michel Nykjær due to financial reasons, despite the Dane currently being third overall in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
“This is of course not a happy message to give, but that is unfortunately also a part of motorsport,” said Nykjær.
The Dane is going to be replaced with another driver at Nika Racing for the remaining races this year, a driver which will be announced tomorrow.
“This is of course an unfortunate situation. I would have liked to complete the season with Michel and continue to challenge for second overall but as team manager it is also my assignment to see to the best of our company long term,” said team manager Nicklas Karlsson.
Nykjær has won three races and been on the podium six times this year and is currently heading the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy on equal points with James Nash.
“I have had an amazing season with Nika Racing and even though I would have liked to complete the season, you can’t close your eyes for the huge economical efforts needed for racing on this level in a world championship. 2013 has perhaps been the most important year so far in my career and I am hopeful for the future. I am going to keep a close relationship with the team and I wish them good luck for the end of the season,” said Nykjær.
