Andy Wilmot and Howard Fuller to join Tony Gilham Racing
Tony Gilham Racing have now confirmed their final line-up for the Rockingham race weekend, with 21-year-old Howard Fuller returning to the team to drive the second Vauxhall Insignia, and 32-year-old Andy Wilmot making his BTCC debut in the Volkswagen CC previously driven by Tom Onslow-Cole.
The team confirmed yesterday that Tom Onslow-Cole will now sit out the remainder of season until more development work can be done on the Volkswagen CC for 2014, and earlier in the week that Jack Goff will return behind the wheel of the #31 Vauxhall Insignia after missing the Knockhill round.
Wilmot will therefore join Warren Scott at Rockingham in the second of the two Volkswagen CCs, with Fuller making his return after driving for the team in the Super 2000-specification Honda Civic last season.
“Tony has given me the opportunity and I am absolutely delighted,” said Fuller. “It has been a little tough watching the season at times but we knew the chance would come so now I just can’t wait to get out there.
“I think we did a pretty solid job last year and although I’m still relatively new to the BTCC, I’m not new to racing. I’ll just approach it like it’s another race and I’ll be out to do the best job I can do.”
Wilmot has been racing until recently in the Volkswagen Racing Cup in the UK for Tony Gilham Racing, and will become the 12th driver to make his debut in the 2013 BTCC season.
“It’s the dream for any tin top driver to be in the BTCC,” said Wilmot. “I signed with Tony two years ago and it was always in the pipeline to progress from the VW Cup to the BTCC and I am just delighted to have been given this opportunity.”
Wilmot’s deal is just for the Rockingham event at present, whilst Fuller is also due to race for the team at the penultimate round at Silverstone.
