Mat’o Homola aims to keep winning after home victory
Mat’o Homola delighted the crowd during the ETCC race at the Slovakiaring with a victory in front of the home crowd, as the only Slovakian driver at the event.
Homola qualified in second position, and though an assisted slide in Turn 1 dropped him down to fourth at the start, he was able to recover to finish in back where he qualified in second.
With the standing start in race two, Homola then was able to launch from seventh on the grid up to P2 at the start, and on the second lap he was able to pick off Andreas Pfister’s SEAT Supercopa for the lead and then defend against a late charge from Petr Fulín to take his first win in the ETCC and move up to second in the S2000 class standings.
“It was really nice to see the crowd waving their hands,” said Homola to TouringCarTimes after the race. “We had problems with the engine before this event so we didn’t know if we could start or not, so it’s a really great success for us, for my team and for my family.
“All the races were really tough, there was a lot of overtaking and I imagine for the crowd and the audience it was really fun to watch.
With Fulín and Homola both scoring a win and a second place each, the points gap remains the same as at the end of Monza, but Homola now moves up to second in the standings heading to the next round of the Cup at the Salzburgring in three week’s time.
“Petr Fulín is really fast, but he will have the success ballast at Salzburgring, which has quite a big hill and down the crest, so it’s really hard on the engine to reach the top speed so we will see,” he added.
